notfadeaway (remembering buddy holly)

Last updated:  16 November 1997

Steve Earle has a contribution (a collaboration billed as "Marty Stuart and Steve Earle") on the notfadeaway (remembering buddy holly) album that was released 2 January 1996 on the Decca label. Steve and Marty's song is Crying, Waiting, Hoping.

Steve shares vocals and plays the high string acoustic guitar and the harmonica.

The liner notes say:

"About a week after he demoed Peggy Sue Got Married, Holly recorded another new one, Crying, Waiting Hoping. Again a frilly overdub added by (producer Norman) Petty obscures the song's original urgency. That's not a problem with hillbillyrockers Marty Stuart and Steve Earle's version. The triple guitar attack (Stuart on acoustic and electric slide, Earle on high-string acoustic guitar, and producer Richard Bennett on electric axe) give the song all the angst and raw power that Hollysurelyintended."

Other artists who have Buddy songs on the album are The Mavericks, Nanci Griffith, Los Lobos, The Band, The Tractors, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kevin Montgomery, Joe Elyand Todd Snider, Suzy Bogguss with Dave Edmunds, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Waylon Jennings with Mark Knopfler.

the following except of a review is by Dave Hoekstra, from the Chicago SunTimes, 11 January 1996:

"Steve Earle and Marty Stuart applya riveting triple-guitar assault on Crying, Waiting, Hoping. The Beatles were big disciples of Holly, but this sounds more like a Rolling Stones track."

Grade: 4 stars

the following review is by Tom Sinclair, as printed in the December 22, 1995 Entertainment Weekly magazine:

VARIOUS ARTISTS - notfadeaway: remembering buddy holly (Decca)

The Mavericks, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Los Lobos are among the contributors to this overdue tribute. Since it would take a consummate bungler to ruin a Hollysong, most of this sounds, well, all right. The onlybum note is struck by the Hollies, who electronically(and presumptuously) alter Hol/lyrics/ly's '58 vocal from Peggy Sue Got Married to suit their new arrangement. Imagine doing something like that to John Lennon.
