New
York
By Steve
Earle
Everything I know about New York would
fit into a relatively small rectangle
Or trapezoid, I suppose
Bordered by Avenue D on the east
Downtown to Houston and uptown to 10th
And cross-town, I'guess, to Washington
Square
The first place I ever got BEAT
Oh, Yeah I always had me a real nice hotel
room
Tucked safely away somewhere in the east
fifties
I'd touch down at Newark
Or out at LaGuardia
Slump down in the back of a black limousine
I'd fidget and smoke all the way to Manhattan
Check in and catch me a taxi downtown
Tompkins Square Park would be right where
I left it
I could stay gone a year
It'd still smell the same
The man with the plan would find ME on
3rd st.
"HEY PAPA WHAS UP? NEED SOMETHIN'TODAY?"
And every trip back I ventured lower and
east-er
'Til I stood with my back to the FDR Drive
And I finally said fuck it and let myself
fall
Right off the edge of New York
